Coming soon to a video store near you...

I know this is really random, but I still haven't had a chance to post anything about the Ohio State-Michigan game last week, and I'm afraid the statute of limitations for posting on it might run by the time I'm done with finals in mid December...

Thus, I thought I would post this photo for now, in hopes of tolling the SOL, and being able to blog about the game later down the line or at least share some random college football thoughts when finals are over...

What's up Bro?

"Rufus, Brint, and Meekus were like brothers to me. And when I say brother, I don't mean, like, an actual brother, but I mean it like the way black people use it. Which is more meaningful I think."
--Derek Zoolander

I rarely use the word 'brother' or 'bro' when talking to or referring to my friends, but this useless piece of information never really stood out to me until I came across the following article on CBS Sportsline this morning. The article 'clarified' a situation arising from Michael Irvin's arrest last Friday on an outstanding warrant for an unpaid speeding ticket in Irving, Texas, while also being charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after police found a pipe in his ride...

The link for this article said "Irvin: 'Brother' comment misunderstood" and when you click on it, the article headline clears up the situation even more with the following: "Irvin clarifies: 'Brother of mine' not literally his brother"...

In a document filed with the court, the arresting officer quoted Irvin as saying "It's my brother's, he left it in there," yet apparently they are not related...The article adds that Irvin told the AP that a police officer apparently took his use of the word "brother" literally when he was arrested Friday after being pulled over for speeding...

This morning, after coming to the realization that I don't use 'bro' or 'brother' very often, I thought that maybe now would be a good time to start...Yet, I would also prefer to avoid any confusing situations that the 'Plea-Maker' now finds himself in...Maybe I'll use the word 'brah' instead, kinda like those kids in California do...

Or maybe I'll just stick to saying 'holmes,' which is a descendant of the slang terms 'homes' and 'homey', as well as continuing to use terms such as 'jerk,' 'son,' 'bastard,' and 'son of a bitch' when addressing my friends (the last two can also be combined into 'bastard son of a bitch')...I even find myself keeping things simple from time to time and just referring to some of them simply as 'friend,' as in 'how are you doing, friend?'...

Anyway, in hopes of avoiding any confusing situations in the future, I would now like to clarify for the record that I have one sister and no brothers, at least none that I know about...

Thus, to any of my friends out there that ever read this post, be sure to take it as a compliment if I ever call you 'bro' or 'brother'...Because when I say brother, I don't mean, like, an actual brother, but I mean it like the way black people use it. Which is more meaningful I think...

Live from New York, It's Laguna Beach!!!

Please put me down as one of those who was disappointed with the Laguna Beach season finale…MTV bled this season dry of any drama left before hyping their commercial free season finale…They even had a live studio audience and promised a special guest, as well as a ‘special surprise’…

Anyway, I think Teen Wolf summed the finale up best: “It was just bitches crying…It was pretty awful and I should have watched Las Vegas instead…” (For those of you who are thinking that Las Vegas comes on an hour earlier than Laguna, Teeny had recorded Las Vegas since it was on at the same time as Prison Break…)

After 20 minutes of goodbyes and excessive crying, MTV cut back to Carson Daly or Simon Rex or whoever that dick with ears was, and asked a couple audience members what they thought…Of course, these two idiots weren’t going to say anything bad about the show and therefore said that they loved it, while one of the guys next to them admitted he cried a little bit…

We then got to see some clips of Season 3, and my first impression is that you can count me in, despite my disappointment from the season 2 finale…It looks like we'll be treated to much of the same as season 2—a few different sets of girls being bitches to each other—but for some reason, I’m sure I’ll be watching…

Next, the special guest turned out to be ‘Lauren,’ and I was confused for a second, until I remembered Lauren is LC’s first name…By the way, LC apparently has a younger sister, and it appears that lil’ sis will be a main character on Season 3…However, I wonder if she'll go by her actual name or if she'll be referred to as “LC’s Sister,” similar to how one of the Alex’s on Season 2 was always referred to as “Kristin’s Friend” or how Conrad was always referred to as “Jason’s Friend”...

Anyway, Simon Rex then asked LC about her experiences with all the cameras following her around and she said it was fun, but that it was also time to move on, leading us to the big surprise: “The Hills”...

Apparently, even though it was time to move on from the cameras, LC’s new life in LA will be featured on MTV’s upcoming show “The Hills,” debuting this spring on MTV…I like LC, and she’s cool and all, yet I don’t really know if I’m going to be watching this show…

Judging from the following comments, I don’t think Teen Wolf was too thrilled with this new show idea either: “They should follow one of those dumb girls around instead…Or go watch Kristin be a whore in college…Or watch Jessica’s…” (Ummm, yeah, that’s a good place to stop quoting Teeny…)

Anyway, I might watch a couple episodes of "The Hills"—especially considering the fact that it will be on this spring while Season 3 of Laguna Beach won’t debut til the summer—but if I had it my way, Season 3 would start during Christmas break, just in time for the end of finals…

Ten Days Later...

Boy, I never thought I would have a ten-day gap between posts these days, especially with all of the good material out there to blog on, yet I guess I'm beginning to stress a bit with my semester coming to an end and finals fast approaching...

I wanted to keep everyone updated on the Carolina Panthers cheerleaders' situation--former cheerleaders, that is--but I guess that story got overblown by the media almost immediately...However, I did find in interesting to read that Penthouse Magazine offered them an opportunity to pose nude, although I haven't heard if they accepted or not...

Anyway, there are plenty of things I've been meaning to write about recently, and I usually come across some pretty interesting links from time to time, so hopefully I can share some of those ideas and links in the near future...

I really don't know how much I'm going to be blogging while I study for finals, but hopefully I can share some random thoughts from time to time...

Until next time, take care kids...

Cat Fight at Banana Joe's

Nothing like a good headline to start the week...After angrily getting off the phone with my bank's customer service department (more on that later perhaps...), I came across this jewel on CNNSI.com:

"Panthers cheerleaders charged in bar fight"

A little bit later, a friend sent me a link to an article on the brawl from one of the local TV stations, and this one included a couple photos of the two girls...

Anyway, the Panthers are aware of the incident, but have declined comment so far...Thus, there's still no word on whether or not Angela and Renee will be booted by the Top Cats' cheer-ocracy...

Yet, if they do lose their spots, I doubt they will be 'free-agents' for long, as these two sound like perfect additions to the Vikings' cheerleading squad...

The O.C. Returns...

After a few weeks off during the MLB playoffs, The O.C. returns to Fox tonight, and I really don't know what to expect, as I can't remember the last episode I saw...I planned to catch up on the show during the playoffs, yet Teen Wolf (my roommate) deleted the two episdodes I still needed to watch because we were running out of room on our DVR...However, my roommate has still managed to find room for the last 12 episodes of 'Lost', including the two reruns that they've played the last two weeks...I must admit, though, that I'm taking up my fair share of space, as well, with 9 episodes of VH1's "I Love the 80's: 3D" (I'm only missing 1980!), as well as a few episodes of "Walker, Texas Ranger" that were recently aired on the Hallmark Channel...

Anyway, my two favorite parts from the show this season have more to do with pop culture than the show itself and both moments were from the first episode...I think the best part so far was the scene of Seth watching Teen Wolf (one of my favorite movies) and then questioning what it is about being a wolf that makes "Scott Howard" a better basketball player...Next, I also enjoyed the remix of Bloc Party's "Blue Light" that was played near the end of the episode when the bus that Ryan's brother was on drives away...

So, maybe its unfair for me to say that I'm unimpressed considering the little I've seen so far, but I am beginning to get a little impatient...

Yo D.J.

A few days ago, when I was pointing out some of the headlines on ESPN.com, the top college football headline at the time (on Monday night) was “Georgia’s Shockley cleared to practice Tuesday,” which shouldn’t necessarily stand out…Yet, after reading an article on CBS Sportsline this past Sunday, a couple quotes from D.J. Shockley did grab my attention:

"If they really needed me, I would have played."

Well, after watching a few of UGA’s offensive possessions against Florida last Saturday, it seemed pretty clear to me that they really needed you…Even on one leg, I think Shockley—the SEC's highest-rated passer—could have been more effective than Joe Tereshinski, a first-time starter who had thrown 23 career passes.

"It was one of those situations if something did happen, I might be out the rest of the year. Maybe it's a good thing I sat out."

Yeah, maybe it’s a good thing you sat out, but like Bill Walton says, “You’re playing for the ultimate prize, big fella….” Sure, you may be out the rest of the year if something happened and your current injury worsened. But with the loss last weekend, any chance that UGA had left in regard to playing in the national title game has almost certainly vanished, even if the odds were heavily against them in the first place…

Sure, it is still very likely that UGA could win the SEC title and go to a New Year’s Day bowl, if not a BCS bowl…Yet, when its been 25 years since your last national title and you start the season 7-0, shouldn’t you treat every game as the biggest game of the year? Shouldn’t you play for now and not for the rest of the year? As the Sportsline article said, chances like this don’t come along every year…

I should point out that by no means do I want it to sound like I’m calling Shockley out, nor am I questioning his heart and toughness…I actually have a lot of respect for him after he has been so patient over his years at Georgia, waiting for his chance to start after sitting behind David Greene for the majority of the last three years, this despite coming in as top QB recruits in the country…

Still, I don’t think he did himself any favors with his post game comments—at least with Georgia fans and others in SEC country—by saying he could have played against Florida if his team really needed him…Sure, some of [UGA Head Coach] Mark Richt’s play-calling should be called into question after last Saturday’s game, but it was pretty clear to me that the ‘Dawgs really needed D.J.

As the article above pointed out, Florida had the nation's No. 5 defense, while Georgia's offense was second in the SEC, and Shockley was the conference’s highest-rated passer…Yet without Shockley, UGA was held to 134 yards and 21 points below its average.

Shockley would later add, "You always gotta think when you're out, what would have happened if you had played? It's hard when you're team is out there fighting and you really can't help them."

I guess we’ll never know what would have happened if he had played…However, at least it’s good to know that he could have played if they really needed him…

On a side note, Georgia can take solace in the following quote from Tereshinski following the tough loss, “[L]uckily, I do get one more shot at these guys next year."

The Return of T.J. Ford...

It was nice to see former Texas star and Houston-native T.J. Ford return to the court tonight in the Bucks' 117-108 overtime victory over the 76ers in Philly...

After missing all of last season due to cervical spine surgery, Ford finished Tuesday's season opener one rebound shy of a triple-double--including 14 dimes--to go along with 16 points...

Hopefully there's plenty more solid performances to come for T.J. this season, as it had to be a tough road back...

Links - 11/1/05

Here are some random links and comments that I wanted to share:

--I usually try to stay away from anything that has to do with the race card, but this article really stood out to me today, especially after taking a closer look at Notre Dame's schedule the other night...

--Also, the only thing I really wanted to say regarding Fisher DeBerry's comments last week, whether you think there was some truth to what he said or not, was that it was the first time in a while that I'd heard the term 'Afro-Americans'...

--When ESPN broke the news last Wednesday of Sheryl Swoopes's big announcement, the story didn't garner the same attention on the Houston Chronicle website due to Game 4 of the World Series. In addition, an article on Swoopes didn't even grab the headlines on CNNSI and was listed just three spots ahead of the breaking news that a man was arrested after a recent tussle with Tonya Harding...

--The news surrounding Sheryl Swoopes didn't fall on deaf ears, however, as some guy from Star Trek recently made a similar announcement...

--Here's another article that I found somewhat surprising: Woody Allen's marriage has a 'paternal feeling'...

More to come soon..

Headline News (Part 2)...

One of my good friends from school sent me an article last night from ESPN.com on Joe Paterno, and after checking it out, I quickly noticed a couple of interesting items at the bottom of the page, as there was a list of ESPN's 'Top Headlines' and 'Most Sent Stories'…

ESPN’s 'Top Headline' was that Theo Epstein was stepping down as GM of the Red Sox, while another top story was Daunte Culpepper being out for the season…

However, under the Most Sent Stories category, the second headline immediately jumped out at me: “Arkansas freshman QB Dick to start vs. South Carolina”…

Maybe the reason why this stood out to me was because I’m still pretty immature at times, yet apparently I wasn’t the only one, as this headline stood out to many if such a minor announcement concerning a 2-5 team would be the second most sent article on ESPN.com…

Yet, the story doesn’t end there—and things would only get worse—as later in the evening I received a couple e-mails from another friend from school who said that the original headline on the article was “Dick to replace Johnson vs. Gamecocks”…

On a side note, I don’t know whether the subject lines of the first e-mail my buddy sent out on the topic (“Nutt starting Dick against Cocks”) or the second (“Nutt pulls Johnson to face Cocks with Dick”) were ever actual headlines, but they clearly make perfect sense…

October 26th...

I hope the statute of limitations hasn’t expired on writing about the World Series, as something stood out to me the other day, and I’d been meaning to write about it for almost a week now…

As most of my good friends know, my favorite baseball player growing up was Kirby Puckett of the Minnesota Twins…My mom is from the St. Paul area and I used to go up there every summer (and many winters, as well) and attend a few Twins games while there. I’m sure there are numerous reasons why Puckett stood out to me, but that’s a whole ‘nother blog…

But I must point that my favorite number is 34 due to Puckett’s jersey number, and that is why the number 34 is included in my hotmail address. It is also the reason why I give $34 to my church on Easter and Christmas Eve, while dropping a check for either $7 or $12 in the collection plate every other week of the year…

One of Puckett’s greatest games was Game 6 of the 1991 World Series, so it should come as no surprise that I remember where I was when I watched that game (I was watching it at home with my father). However, it may come as somewhat of a surprise that I’ve always remembered that the game took place on October 26, 1991...

Most will remember that Puckett won the game with a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th off of Atlanta's Charlie Liebrandt, sending the series to a seventh game, which was won by the Twins 1-0 in ten innings the following night. Yet, Puckett also saved at least one run with a great catch at the wall in centerfield, while he also had an RBI triple in the first inning and later scored the second run of the game…

I was 14 years old on October 26, 1991, which was basically the halfway point of my life so far…Now, fast forward 14 years to October 26, 2005 and my hometown Houston Astros were playing in their first World Series…

That’s where the good memories stop, however, as the team I was cheering for this time around wasn’t on the winning side of things on this October 26th…On this October 26th, the Houston Astros became the first team ever to lose two World Series games on the same day, losing Game 3 of the 2005 World Series in the early morning hours of October 26, 2005 (in 14 innings no less!!), before losing Game 4 of the World Series 1-0 on the night of October 26th, completing the Chicago White Sox’s four game sweep…

For some reason, this coincidence really stood out to me, and really that’s all it is, a coincidence…But still, I felt like I had to write about it before it was too late…

More Headline News from Sly Stallone...

Just two weeks after Sylvester Stallone announced that he intends to make a sixth Rocky film comes this news flash: Stallone will reprise his role as John Rambo in Rambo IV. According to the article, “the $50 million Rambo IV will recapture the rawness of [1982’s] First Blood.”

The script hasn’t been written yet, but the “story calls for the reclusive Vietnam veteran to return to his vigilante ways when a young girl is kidnapped.”

Hmmm….Haven’t we already seen this movie?

After reading this article, I immediately thought of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Commando (1985), prompting me to look it up on IMDB. Below is one of the three plot summaries from the movie’s IMDB page:

“Colonel Matrix has retired and is living with his 10 year old daughter in the country. His Daughter is kidnapped to assure that Matrix will kill the president of a Latin American country to allow the return of a dictator. Matrix escapes off a plane flight and has until it lands to rescue his daughter. Matrix must follow the clues he has and solve the mystery in time.”

So, it kinda sounds like a retired and reclusive Army veteran must return to his Special Forces ways when his daughter is kidnapped…

Boy, I can’t wait to see Rambo IV, as well as Rocky VI…If you enjoyed Commando, featuring a 38-year-old Ahnuld, then a 59-year-old Stallone should do wonders in Rambo IV. However, despite Stallone’s acting prowess, the one-liners in Commando will be hard to beat…
