October 26th...

I hope the statute of limitations hasn’t expired on writing about the World Series, as something stood out to me the other day, and I’d been meaning to write about it for almost a week now…

As most of my good friends know, my favorite baseball player growing up was Kirby Puckett of the Minnesota Twins…My mom is from the St. Paul area and I used to go up there every summer (and many winters, as well) and attend a few Twins games while there. I’m sure there are numerous reasons why Puckett stood out to me, but that’s a whole ‘nother blog…

But I must point that my favorite number is 34 due to Puckett’s jersey number, and that is why the number 34 is included in my hotmail address. It is also the reason why I give $34 to my church on Easter and Christmas Eve, while dropping a check for either $7 or $12 in the collection plate every other week of the year…

One of Puckett’s greatest games was Game 6 of the 1991 World Series, so it should come as no surprise that I remember where I was when I watched that game (I was watching it at home with my father). However, it may come as somewhat of a surprise that I’ve always remembered that the game took place on October 26, 1991...

Most will remember that Puckett won the game with a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th off of Atlanta's Charlie Liebrandt, sending the series to a seventh game, which was won by the Twins 1-0 in ten innings the following night. Yet, Puckett also saved at least one run with a great catch at the wall in centerfield, while he also had an RBI triple in the first inning and later scored the second run of the game…

I was 14 years old on October 26, 1991, which was basically the halfway point of my life so far…Now, fast forward 14 years to October 26, 2005 and my hometown Houston Astros were playing in their first World Series…

That’s where the good memories stop, however, as the team I was cheering for this time around wasn’t on the winning side of things on this October 26th…On this October 26th, the Houston Astros became the first team ever to lose two World Series games on the same day, losing Game 3 of the 2005 World Series in the early morning hours of October 26, 2005 (in 14 innings no less!!), before losing Game 4 of the World Series 1-0 on the night of October 26th, completing the Chicago White Sox’s four game sweep…

For some reason, this coincidence really stood out to me, and really that’s all it is, a coincidence…But still, I felt like I had to write about it before it was too late…
